Unique architect.... and amazing effort . This is the really uniqueness of Dam hirakud.
It has the distinction of being the longest dam in the world which length is about
25.8 K.Ms. long with dam and dykes taken together.And this is happens to be the
first post independence major multipurpose river valley project in India. Situated
on the western end , it covers an area of 746 sq kms . Across the river Mahanadi
, this hirakud Dam Project is built at about 15 Kms stretch at upstream of Sambalpur
town in Orissa state .
The project provides irrigations to 1,55,635 Hects of Kharif
and 1,08,385 Hects of Rabi crops to Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir and Subarnapur
district . The water released through power house irrigates further 436,000 Hects
of land in Mahanadi delta. But the mazor thing is that this dam's Installed capacity
for power generation is 307.5 MW through its two power houses built at Burla and
Chiplima . Besides,this project provides flood protection to a area of about 9500
sq Kms of delta area in Cuttack and Puri district . Not only confined within this,
this is also a congregation centre for migratory birds during winter season. It
has a panaromic view from a water tower with a revolving platform is called Jawahar
Marg.
This effort started in the year of 1937. After the high floods of 1937, great architect
of Oriya engineer M. Visveswararya gave proposal for detailed investigation for
storage reservoirs in Mahanadi basin. Target was to tackle problem of floods in
Mahanadi delta.But in the year of 1945,under the chairmanship of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar,
the then Member of Labour in Govt. of India, decision to taken that whethere the
potentiality of river Mahanadi should be fruitfully and investigated for multipurpose
use. Central Water- ways Irrigation and Navigation Commission took up the work.
The foundation stone of hirakud Dam was laid by Sir Howthrone Lewis, the then Governor
of Orissa on 15th March 1946. The project report was submitted to India Government
in June of 1947.
The first batch of concrete was laid by Pandit Jawaharalal Neheru
on 12th April 1948. The project was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister late
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 13th January 1957. Power generation along with supply
for irrigation started progressively and the project came to fully existance in
the year 1966.
The main dam of hirakud spans between hills Lamdungri on left hand Chandili Dunguri
on the right. The Dam is flanked by 21 Kms. long earthen dykes both on left and
right sites to close the low suddles beyond the abutment hills. It has the distinction
of being the longest dam in the world, being 25.8 Kms. long with dam and dykes taken
together. The Catchments area is about 83400 Sq. Kms (32200 sq miles) .hirakud dam
is a composite structure of Earth, Concrete and Masonry. It has also the rare distinct
of forming the biggest artificial lake in Asia with reservoir spread of 743 sq Kms
at full reservoir level. The Completed Cost of this Project was Rs.100.02 crores
in the year of 1957. Here the number of the sluices is 64 i.e. 40 on left and 24
on right. Number of the crest gates is 34 i.e. 21 on left and 13 on right.
Total length of the power channel is 22.40 km . At Burla about 235.50 MW electricity
is generated where as at Chiplima 72.00 MW power generated per day.
The hirakud dam is about 26km distances from Sambalpur town and 6 Kms distances
from NH 6 . The nearest rail head is hirakud railway station , which is at a distances
of 8 Kms from the dam site. This rail connection comes under south eastern railway.
Regular buses are plying to this spots . Besides private vehicles are plently available
to this wonderful site.
