Holiest of the holy places and one of the Indias four Dhamas, Puri occupies a distinct
and unique place in the tourist map of India. It is famous for the abode of lord
Jagannath. Situated at a distance the 60 km. from state capital Bhubaneswar on the
coast on Bay of Bengal, it is world famous for Lord Jagannath Temple and the Car
festival. For the centuries this holy places has been an important centre for hindu
worship and is well connected among the best holiday resorts of the country. This
place has several name . It is known as Nilachala, Nilagiri, Niladri, Purushottam
kshetra,Srikhetra and Sankha khetra.
The temple is holy and grand , the main road infront of the temple is Bada danda,
the offerings to the lord Jagannath is called Mahaprasad and the cremation ground
is Swargadwara, the gateway to heaven . At the centre of the Puri town temple of
lord Jagannath is situated. On the west of the temple is Harachandi sahi, on the
south is Bali sahi, on the north is Dolamandap sahi. Besides the main temple, Puri
has a large number of samller temple dedicated to mostly Lord Shiva,Devi Kali, Lord
Hanuman
Researchers say that great persons like Jesus Christ, Guru Nanak, Srichaitnya, Sankaracharya,
Ballav acharya, Tulsi Das, Kabir had visited this place and had left behind some
sweet memories. The Narendra Pond , Bimala temple, Indradumna pond, Sunar Gauranga,
Gundicha Temple, Swarga Dwar, Mukti mandap, Koili Baikuntha, Sankaracharya Matha,
Emarnath library, Sanskrit University and a charming sea beach are some of the noteworthy
places of Puri.
Here resides Lord Jagannath ... the lord of universe.His temple is called Srimandir.
Built on the year between 1078-1147AD, this temple built on an elevated ground about
twenty feet above the level of the sorruoundings. The height of the main temple
is 214.8 feet.
Ratha jatra or car festival is the most important festival of Lord Jagannath.This
colorful festival draws milions of devotees from various part of the country as
well as abroad.It is held every year in between june and july.
This holy city Puri has a salubrius climate . It attracts tourists from all over
the world round the year . But particularly during summer it has a unique attraction.Because
it has one of the finest beaches of the world. It is also called as summer resort
of India. It is the home of numerous artisans and craftmen, who produce rare exquisite
handicrafts of a large variety.
Bramhagiri : This place is famous for Alarnath Temple. It is situated at
the distance of 23 kms from Puri.
Bali Harchandi : This is an beautiful picnic spot and situated at the distance
of 35 kms from Puri. Here resides famous goddess Harchandi.
Kuruma : This place is famous for Buddhist Monastry . It is situated at a
distance of 8 kms Konark sun temple .
Ramchandi : This place is situated at the distance of 5 km. from Konark sun
temple .It is a beautiful picnic spot and is famous for the Goddess Ramchandi temple.
Satapara : Satapara is situated at a distance of 50kms on Puri-Brahmagiri
road on Chilika lake coast. About lakhs of pilgrims turn to this place to watch
the natural beauty and dances of Dolphin every year .
Pipili : At a distance of 40kms from Puri, this place is famous for Applique
works. Here this art work is traditional.
Astaranga : A plce of fishing and enjoying. A beautiful beach, this place
Astaranga is situated atleast 60kms away from Puri.
Sakhigopal : On the way to Bhubaneswar to Puri one will come across this
scenic spots . It is famous for the Lord Gopinath Temple and Satyabadi Bana Vidyalaya
.
Beleswar Matha : At a distance of 13kms from Puri , this famous scenic beauty
is on the sea shore . Here is the famous Beleswar Matha and Lord Shiva Temple.
Kakatpur : At a distance of 65kms from Bhubaneswar this spot is famous for
Goddess Mangala Temple.
For a tourist to reach this holy town is best on the road and rail . This town is
well connected with state capital Bhubaneswar on road , which is at a distance of
60 kms only.Regular privat and government buses are plying to this town. Several
tourist bus is also available as per inquiry.The bus charge form Bhubaneswar to
Puri is in between Rs 30 t0 45, varies from bus service provider . This town is
not directly rail connected with Bhubaneswar city, but several regualr and express
trains connects this town through Khurda rail junction to the other part of the
country.
